One of the best underground barbecue joints in Louisville is quite literally underground. M&M Bar-B-Q, located in the basement kitchen of Ekklesia Christian Life Ministries, has been humbly cooking up the best barbecue and comfort food in Louisville for about a year. After moving around the city the fiancees Malaya Harris and Marcus Reed (M&M respectively) have finally found a permanent home under the church where the pair first met thanks to their pastor Stephan Kirby Sr. “It’s almost like destiny” says Maylea who was grateful for the kitchen after an unexpected move from their Shively operation.
Malaya works inside in the fully equipped catering kitchen making her signature mac and cheese, cornbread and greens (try the greens they’re seriously delicious). Marcus on the other hand spends his time outside by the barbecue set up in the parking lot facing Bluegrass Avenue and his adoring fans. Almost like clockwork car horns honk and approving shouts are directed at Marcus as he barbecues burgers, ribs and wings. During our interview Marcus even experience an official commendation from an LMPD cruiser “Best ribs in town”.
To both Malaya and Marcus making the best food is all about freshness. Malaya never uses canned vegetables in her recipes and Marcus is constantly at the grill to make sure that the meat inside is always warm and ready. Due to their location M&M is a carry-out only restaurant but the couple hopes to change that in the future. For now swing by this low key barbecue setup, have a chat with Malaya and Marcus, and enjoy their amazing food.
