Navigating the waters of new motherhood can be difficult, babies are after all infamous for their lack of instruction manuals, but the natural food market Rainbow Blossom has helped create a safe space for new moms and their babies. The group Empowered Parenting, which meets at Rainbow Blossom Gardiner Lane location, has built a strong community of women new to motherhood. “It’s a welcoming community of problem solving and understanding issues that make not be exclusive to you.” says Sarah Simon who joined the group after her first baby and continues to attend meetings with her second child, “It’s a good place to vent frustration that you can then turn into practical skills and empathy.” The group is facilitated by lamaze certified and parenting educator Angela Garvin of Birth Louisville. Specialist from the community also attend the meetings to educate the parents on specific topics.
Taking those first steps into motherhood can be a difficult undertaking to go through alone. The group’s main goal is to ease the transition into motherhood and to continue to provide a community of support for both the baby and parent. Garvin and the experts address many concerns of first time mothers including medical woes such as postpartum and increased stress as well as more personal topics including finding balance and staying organized. “It’s such an amazing opportunity to get together with other moms.” says Michelle Hutchins, who attends the meetings with her infant daughter and enjoys the informal discussion with childcare experts “Some of my favorite opportunities are when they have speakers or different professionals come and talk about things we need to know about…it’s nice to have physical therapist and speech therapist come and talk to you about your child’s development.”
The Empowered Parenting collective is part of a wider project by Rainbow Blossom, The Year of Healthy Babies and Healthy Families. The initiative is centered around the promotion of healthy activities for newborns, young children and families. Other aspects of the initiative include making Rainbow Blossom Stores more accessible to children, reserving parking spaces for new and expecting mothers and a variety of other classes aimed at helping families grow and stay healthy.
